Porumbesti commune is located in the north-western part of Satu Mare county, it covers an area of 3340 ha and has a population of 2800 inhabitants, according to the 2002 population census. The commune has 2 belonging villages, Porumbesti and Cidreag, and the following neighborhoods:
* Ukraine, to the north;
* Halmeu commune, 2 km east;
* Turulung commune, to the south;
* Micula commune, to the west.
As a form of relief, the plain predominates. The village of Porumbesti got its name from the pigeon bush, very widespread in the settlement border (plumber-koken), having in time the following names:
Kukynus(1274);
Kekenyes(1483);
Kokonyosd (1828);
Kokenyesd (1851);
Kokenyesd- Porumbesti (2002).
It is assumed that the name of the locality Cidreag comes from the name of some fruits, similar to the villages in Ukraine, with which it is adjacent. From the data received from the inhabitants, the village had the following names over time: Chudruk, Chedres, Chedreg, Ciedreg, Cidreag. The documents attest that Porumbesti and Cidreag were formed on feudal domains in the 13th century. A document mentions the division of borders between the villages of Cidreag and Almas, and in 1323 the village of Dabolt is also mentioned. In the 18th century, coming from the east, Jews settled in the radius of the commune. It is important to mention that their presence in the villages of the commune brings beneficial changes, especially in economic life. From many families, men immigrated to the USA for work.
From here they sent money for the maintenance of the families left at home. Many of them never returned. According to the last census from 2002, we have the following statistical data regarding the population of the villages of Porumbesti commune:* Porumbesti with 1534 inhabitants and 513 families;* Cidreag with 1066 inhabitants and 323 families;Distribution of the population by nationality in Porumbesti commune: 47 inhabitants of Romanian nationality, 2121 inhabitants of Hungarian nationality, 429 inhabitants of Rroma nationality, 2 inhabitants of German nationality, and 1 inhabitant of Ukrainian nationality. Distribution of the population by religion in Porumbesti commune: 27 inhabitants of Orthodox religion, 1014 inhabitants of Roman Catholic nationality, 1493 inhabitants of Greek Catholic religion, 65 inhabitants of Reformed religion, and 1 inhabitant of Adventist religion.
