The town of Vásárosnamény is located in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. According to archaeological findings, the settlement and its surroundings have been inhabited since ancient times, the first written mention in 1214: Numen. The name may come from a personal name of German origin, with Hungarian pronunciation. Its first known owners are the Lónyay family, who, according to tradition, were a conquering Hungarian clan. The name Lónyay was taken from nearby Lónya. Namény had been the property of the Eötvös family since the early 1700s, and they remained its owners until 1945. In the revolution and freedom struggle of 1848-1849, members of the Eötvös family of noble origin who lived in Nameny also played an active role. Lord Tamás Bereg and his brother Mihály became government commissioners. The Doby brothers, who live in neighboring Vitka, fought as national defenders in Bem’s army. It was declared a city in 1978.
